Our alumnus, Luo Chen Jun, is the creator of the Future Builders Youth Mentorship Programme. It is a social impact programme sponsored by the Singapore National Youth Council which focuses on equipping underprivileged youths currently enrolled in tertiary education institutions with essential soft skills to enhance their employability and prepare them for their transition into the workforce.

The programme is in partnership with the Malaysian-based startup Future Lab, aimed at empowering the B40 or bottom 40% youth population in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Who is Luo Chen Jun, you might ask?

Well, he is an alumnus of all three Nottingham University campuses!

Chen Jun, or C.J., did his Foundation in Arts at the Malaysia campus, BA in International Communications with Chinese at the UK campus, and his master's degree in Business, Economy and Society of Contemporary China at the Ningbo campus in China.

We, at the Alumni and Donor Relations Office (ADRO), had the opportunity to ask C.J. some questions regarding the programme he had orchestrated and his time with Nottingham.

ADRO: What inspired you to create the Future Builders Youth Mentorship Programme?

C.J.: The inspiration behind creating the Future Builders Youth Mentorship Programme stemmed from a profound commitment to addressing the needs of underprivileged youths in Malaysia, particularly those who fall under the B40 group. Recognising the transformative power of mentorship, I sought to provide a platform and programme that empowers these young individuals to overcome challenges, develop essential skills, and unlock their full potential.

ADRO: Why do you believe soft skills are vital to enhance a person's employability?

C.J.: Soft skills form the foundation of employability in today's dynamic workforce. Beyond technical competencies, traits like communication, adaptability, and teamwork are indispensable. The Future Builders Youth Mentorship Programme places a strategic emphasis on nurturing these soft skills, as they not only enhance employability but also foster personal growth, resilience, and the ability to navigate diverse professional landscapes.

ADRO: What is your message to all the underprivileged youths out there who would be thrilled to be a part of a programme such as this?

To every underprivileged youth aspiring to join the Future Builders Youth Mentorship Programme, I extend a heartfelt message of encouragement. Embrace this opportunity to learn, grow, and envision a future rich with possibilities. More importantly, always remember that your circumstances do not define your potential. So, seize the chance to build lasting connections, acquire valuable skills, and embark on a journey towards a brighter and more fulfilling future.

ADRO: When creating this programme, did you apply any skills that you obtained from your study at Nottingham in the decision-making process?

C.J.: My time at Nottingham equipped me with critical thinking and decision-making skills that were instrumental in shaping the Future Builders Youth Mentorship Programme. The ability to analyse complex situations, consider diverse perspectives, and make informed decisions was honed during my studies. These skills played a pivotal role in designing a program that is effective, inclusive, and responsive to the unique needs of the target audience.

ADRO: Describe your time at Nottingham in three words.

Innovative, Diverse, Empowering.
