The NetCon (Network and Connect) with Alumni event was organised by the Education Network 21/22 on 8 and 9 March 2022 in conjunction with the Education Week 2022. It was done virtually via Microsoft Teams. The event was committed to providing current students of University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) with insightful information on their futures and potential career prospects.
Thirteen successful alumni were invited as guest speakers for the two-day event. The speakers were all from diverse backgrounds and industries, who shared their experiences and provided participants with guidance and advice.
The first day of the event gathered alumni from the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FOSE). They were Choo Tzer Maan, Chief Executive Officer of ELMLAB Sdn Bhd; Carmen Lee, Clinical Physiologist at WeCare Allied Health Center; Chin Ren Yi, Co-founder and Managing Director at myBurgerLab; Mathialagan Magendran, Board of Director at Global Compact Network Malaysia; Sahl Abdus Salam, Managing Consultant at Baringa, UK; Teh Yong Lin, Chief Executive Officer of Kravve.Co and Yvonne Teoh, Organization & Employee Experience Designer at FedEx Express.
The second day was focused on the alumni and participants from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The invited alumni were Harith Ridzuan, CEO and Founder of The Green Factory; Derrick Tan, Regional Sales Director at Howden; Kwan Wan Hong, Assistant Vice President at Yayasan Khazanah; Rynn Leow Chok Nam, Vice President Client Coverage at HSBC Global Banking; Sarah Wong, People Lead at Human Inc and Tan Lee Xiang, Manager in Deals Advisory at PwC Malaysia.
The event on both days kicked off with a welcome remark from Sharina Baharuddin, the alumni relations officer at UNM. The invited alumni speakers then continued to introduce themselves before a group photo session with all participants.
All participants were then split into the breakout room together with two to three alumni speakers. During the breakout room session, participants had opportunities to network with alumni within the room and were able to ask questions and get some advice from the alumni. Each breakout room session lasted for 20 minutes before the alumni speakers rotated into another breakout room with a new group of participants. There were a total of three breakout room sessions which enabled all participants to network and connect with all alumni.
One of the student volunteers who attended the event, Hanson Chong Zhi Zheng, said, “The advice and experience sharing came from different perspectives and were suitable for students who find themselves in different circumstances in their own journey. Overall, the session was informative, and it was a great effort from the team!”
The event attracted more than 200 participants, and responses and feedback from participants were positive and well received. First-year students who joined this event expressed their fears and felt lost at the beginning of the session, but all were mitigated after their conversation with alumni.
The event closed with a closing remark from Iffa Elyana, the Students’ Association Education Officer 21/22. In addition to the event was a giveaway activity, where participants had an opportunity to win RM150 worth of Grab vouchers when they posted photos of the event on Instagram.
