The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) organised its first international alumni dinner in Dubai on 26 May 2022 at the Sheraton Grand Hotel.
It was the first international alumni event for the year and the night aimed to bring together both UNM staff members and alumni to rekindle friendships and reminisce about their time in Malaysia. It was heartening to welcome over 20 alumni to the dinner and hearing how their lives and careers have been propelled by the university.
The evening kicked off with a welcome address by Professor Andy Chan, Vice-Provost (Research and Knowledge Exchange), followed by a short speech by Mr Jag Singh, Director of Student Recruitment and Marketing, before each member of staff and alumnus introduced themselves to all attendees.
According to Jag, “This inaugural alumni dinner in Dubai marks the beginning of a new and exciting alumni engagement programme for the university which is linked to the university's global ambition of enabling our alumni anywhere in the world.”
"The team and I were delighted to meet our alumni in Dubai and hear their individual stories about their time at UNM and how they were progressing now. We look forward to more activities in the coming months,” he added.
The night was filled with laughter and positive vibes from alumni and all who attended. Yousaf Rizwan (Mechanical Engineering, 2014) said, “It was a pleasure to reconnect with old colleagues, and I was excited to learn that we have such a strong alumni community here. Special thanks to the organising committee for arranging this impeccable event.”
The alumni thoroughly enjoyed the dinner and are looking forward to more events in the future. “The alumni dinner was a dose of nostalgia I needed. Meeting people and being able to relate through university experiences, shared professors and mutual friends was remarkable. Hats off to the team from UNM who put this together. You can be certain I will be there for the next one,” said Jamaal Careem (Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering, 2020).
Another alumnus, Merna Ehab (Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering, 2021) advised all students, “UNM and its incredible memories bonds all of us to this huge incredible family. Please take advantage of every moment, it will indeed be the best years of your life.”
The event ended with a photo session with all attendees. It was a night to celebrate memories while making new ones.
