Title : 'The Science Citation Index - What Every Academic Should Know Before Starting Research and Tips for Writing a Research Paper'
Abstract :
The Science Citation Index is an on-line database on the Web-of-Science platform for searching an article among 6,500 journals. The SCI calculates the 'Impact Factor' of a journal annually; it can be searched for the number of 'Citations' to a publication by a given author. These parameters, along with the 'h-Index', are now used to evaluate researchers, to assess grant applications as well as to rank universities. Papers in some fields are always well cited whereas papers in others are rarely mentioned, and for a good reason. For graduate students in particular, studying under a principal researcher having a high h-index may give a headstart to the students' academic careers. How these numbers are derived, what they mean and how administrators use them will be explain in this talk.
