Field Coordinator; Management and Ecology of Malaysian Elephants (MEME)

We are seeking suitable candidates to apply for the Field Coordinator (internally known as Research Associate) position to work in Management and Ecology of Malaysian Elephants (MEME) project. This is a temporary position for a duration of 10 months.

Job Responsibilities:

  • To coordinate field activities i.e. elephant tracking, field recce, camera trap servicing, elephant collaring expeditions etc with relevant authorities and parties, students and researchers.
  • To carry out camera trapping and bioacoustics data collection and research at project sites.
  • To assist in managing MEME field houses and field equipment together with Field Assistants.
  • To work together with the Principal Investigator, co-investigators, Project Manager and consultants on field research, data collection, monitoring, and training for human elephant conflict mitigation measures within selected community.
  • To liaise with researchers, students and other project partners to carry out surveys, data collection and observatory notes in the field.
  • To attend meetings on behalf of PI and project team in relation to field projects as and when needed.
  • To assist in producing relevant documentation (project reports, outreach material, resource materials).
  • To manage and maintain the various assets, databases and reference materials systematically.
  • To assist and lend a helping hand to other team members to support the goals of the research project, as and when necessary.

Job Requirements:

  • Preferably Bachelor/Masters in Environmental Science/Environmental Management/Conservation Science/ GIS or possess any related experience working in the field to tackle environment conservation issues in Malaysia
  • Have a pleasant disposition and willing to be posted at the field site for extended period.
  • Occasionally travel to various other states for work purposes, meetings and trainings.
  • At least 2 years of working experience in the field for research. Knowledge on camera trapping is an added advantage.
  • Experience in organising activities or events is an added advantage.
  • Experience in using statistical softwares i.e. R, ArcGIS is an added advantage.
  • Able to work under pressure and a good team player.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English. Ability to write and speak in Malay and other languages is an added advantage.
  • Possess valid driving license, ability to drive manual 4WD vehicles is an added advantage.
