Community Coordinator; Management and Ecology of Malaysian Elephants (MEME)

We are seeking suitable candidates to apply for the Community Coordinator (internally known as Research Associate) position to work in Management and Ecology of Malaysian Elephants (MEME) project. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • To engage, build and maintain working relationships with indigenous communities, agriculture smallholders and plantations on the ground at selected project sites.
  • To work together with the Principal Investigator, co-investigator, Project Manager and MEME PhD/ MRes students on developing training for human elephant conflict management and facilitating conflict mitigation and coexistence measures within selected community.
  • To liaise with researchers, students and other project partners to carry out surveys, data collection and observatory notes in the field.
  • To attend meetings on behalf of PI and project team in relation to community project as and when needed.
  • To help organize and facilitate community workshops when required.
  • To assist in producing relevant documentation (project reports, outreach material, resource materials) when necessary.
  • To assist with liaising with vendors and suppliers during mitigation phase on the ground.
  • To manage and maintain the various assets, databases and reference materials systematically as and when needed.
  • To assist and lend a helping hand to other team members to support the goals of the research project, as and when necessary.

Job Requirements:

  • Preferably Bachelor/Masters in Social Sciences, Agriculture/Plantations, Environmental Science/Environmental Management/Conservation Science or possess any related experience working with local communities to tackle environment conservation issues in Malaysia
  • Experience working hands on with rural communities is an added advantage.
  • Have a pleasant disposition and willing to be posted at the field site for extended period.
  • Occasionally travel to KL and various other states for work purposes, meetings and trainings.
  • At least 3 years of working experience in related field.
  • Knowledge in social sciences, communications and wildlife is an added advantage
  • Comfortable with public speaking and engaging with people in general.
  • Able to work under pressure and a good team player.
  • Fluent in both spoken and written Bahasa Malaysia and English.
  • Possess valid driving license, ability to drive manual 4WD vehicles is an added advantage.
