CSCC Projects

Current projects

  • Dr Joanne Lim, Professor Zaharom Nain and Ms Wang Lay Kim (USM) – Integrating New Communication Technology: A Study of Media Convergence in the Malaysian Democracy. Funded by the FRGS grant scheme, Malaysia (September 2014 – 2016).
  • Dr Thomas Barker, Dr Adrien Lee Yuen Beng (USM) and Professor Zaharom Nain - Understanding the Creative Industries in Malaysia and the Place of Creative Cities. Funded by the FRGS grant scheme, Malaysia (September 2014 - September 2016).
  • Dr Joanne Lim and Dr Patrick O'Reilly (CFFRC) - Youth Theatre: Fostering Interculturality Through the Performing Arts in Malaysia. Funded by the ERGS Grant scheme, Malaysia (September 2013 - 2016).
  • Dr Tessa J. Houghton and Professor Zaharom Nain - Digital Community Transformation in Peninsular Malaysia. Funded by the FRGS grant scheme, Malaysia (September 2013 - 2015).
  • Professor Zaharom Nain and Dr Joanne Lim - Social Media and the Agency of Youth in Malaysia. Funded by the FRGS grant scheme, Malaysia (September 2011 - November 2014).

Completed projects

  • Professor Zaharom Nain - Regimes, NGOs and the New Media: A 6-Nation study of Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines. Funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada (June 2009 - June 2011).
  • Dr Joanne Lim (Principal Country Researcher) - Youth, ICT and political engagements in Asia: A 6-nation study involving Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Canada (June 2009 - May 2011).
  • Professor Zaharom Nain (Sole Country Researcher) - The use, restriction and monitoring of Internet facilities in Southeast Asia. Funded by Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, (June 2009 - 2010). 
  • Professor Zaharom Nain (Principal Investigator) - Rethinking the Role of Television in Malaysia: From National Development to Public Service. Funded by the FRGS grant scheme, Malaysia (October 2007 – September 2010). 
  • Professor Zaharom Nain (Project Leader) - Squabbling Siblings, Feisty Friends: Malaysia-Singapore Relationships and the Media. Funded by Universiti Sains Malaysia (October 2007 – September 2010). 
  • Professor Zaharom Nain - Problematizing Culture: The Mass Media, Urban Identity and the State. Funded by ISEAS, Singapore (1993-1996).
