While writing with a pencil have you ever realised that you are creating the revolutionary nanomaterial of this century? Graphene is the two dimensional carbon material in the lead of pencil; it is a rising star of material science with tremendous properties and unlimited applications. My research focuses on the anticancer applications of Graphene nanosheets. In my studies, Graphene is used as a drug carrier for effective delivery of anti-cancer drugs and as a biosensor for early stage cancer detection. Due to the safety concerns the different steps of Graphene synthesis in my experiments is carried out in eco-friendly methods which avoids the use of toxic reagents. The successful results of this research could pave the way to eradicate cancer in an efficient way. Next time you write with a pencil remember you are creating Graphene sheets which have the power to change the world.

The photo shows me enjoying a flash of inspiration when I found an energy source. My research focuses on turning wastewater into energy. In my studies, I have developed an innovative solution through an effective cost-saving treatment method. This ground breaking method known as co-digestion is used to generate renewable energy by treating wastewater from the oleo chemical industry. The impact of this study allows me to generate green energy and spread “beams” of enjoyment to the world.

My project is about fabricating nanoparticles originating from natural resources to treat colon cancer as an alternative to chemical therapeutics that immensely affect patients’ quality of life. Portraying it in a chess-like game is to highlight on the common grounds I find between this game and my research work. As chess is considered a game that provides mental clarity required for solving problems, analyse consequences, and formulate future tactics, so as my research which requires careful consideration to come up with solutions that can terminate the suffering from colon cancer. In short, the front line (eight pawns) represents the results of different experiments carried on to characterise the nanoparticles, the biggest tube (the king) is the nanoparticle formulation under study and the rest of plastic-ware represent the different consumables used during my research. So far promising results are showing up, hoping that continues for a colon cancer-free life!

This picture captures a part of my favourite study corner in UNMC. Experience pressures and difficulties is unavoidable in doing research; however, with hard work, well-organised plans and greatly self-motivated by this lovely corner, I strongly believe in winning those challenges and heading to a happy graduation with a PhD degree.

Little did the caterpillar know, its endgame is not forming a cocoon, but to spread its wings and brace the challenges in the air. As much as we anticipate the endgame, it will be the beginning of a new game, and that is the beauty of life.

This photo was captured in a classroom when I did part-time teaching job during my PhD journey at UNM. Loving to share my achieved knowledge and expertise with students and colleagues motivates me to become a university lecturer after obtaining PhD degree as well as to pursue my research interests.
