Internship: International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (Malaysia) - Migration Intern

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent - Migration Intern

Description:
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) was founded in 1919 in Paris in the aftermath of World War I. The war had shown a need for close cooperation between Red Cross Societies, which, through their humanitarian activities on behalf of prisoners of war and combatants, had attracted millions of volunteers and built a large body of expertise. A devastated Europe could not afford to lose such a resource.

Position background:
The internship is established to support the IFRC Migration Unit. The IFRC Migration Unit provides expert support and capacity building to 38 Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies across the Asia Pacific region, to work with and for vulnerable migrants. National Societies strive to provide assistance and protection to migrants, uphold their rights and dignity, empower them in their search for opportunities and sustainable solutions, as well as promote social inclusion and interaction between migrants and host communities. The duration of the internship is three (3) to six (6)-months.

Note:
This internship is aimed at School of Politics, History and International Relations (PHIR) third year and PGT students.

Key activities of the Migration Intern:

  • Undertake a thematic analysis of the humanitarian needs and vulnerabilities of migrants. For example, the needs and vulnerabilities of refugees and asylum seekers, labour migrants, irregular migrants, or stateless migrants. The specific focus of the analysis could be decided based on the intern’s qualifications and experience.
  • A mapping of existing stakeholders relevant to the humanitarian needs of the particular migrant group of focus.
  • A mapping of the normative framework (laws, policies and regulations) relevant to the humanitarian needs of the migrant group in focus.
  • A mapping and analysis of the existing and potential role of RCRC Movement support for the thematic group of migrants in focus, given the above analysis and evidence base.
  • Develop effective communication tools (internal and external) on the needs and vulnerabilities of the thematic group of migrants in focus across Asia Pacific, as well as the role of the RCRC Movement in working with and for migrants.

Position arrangements

  • The intern will be based in the Asia Pacific Regional office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and also has the option of being home based if preferred.
  • It is suggested that the intern should be working towards an advanced academic qualification in international law, international relations, development or a related field.
