The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus hosted the country’s largest gathering of psychology researchers, lecturers, students and practitioners on Saturday. More than 500 delegates attended the Malaysian Psychology Conference from all over Malaysia, as well as from as far afield as Japan, Singapore, Iran, Bangladesh, the UK and Canada.
“We are delighted with the turnout,” said Dr Ian Stephen, one of the conference’s organisers, who also presented his research in a talk, “the standard of work on display from senior professors to undergraduate students was extremely impressive.” More than fifty research talks and forty posters were presented at the conference by students, teachers, researchers and practitioners of all branches of psychology, from clinical and counselling psychology, through cognitive neuroscience to evolutionary, social and perceptual psychology. Delegates were also treated to a tour of the state of the art psychology research facilities hosted on UNMC’s 100-acre campus, which was completed in 2006.
The keynote address was presented by Prof Katsuo Mori from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Japan, who spoke about new technology that allows two different people to view different images on the same screen at the same time. His research has been important in research into eye witness testimony from crimes. Six further plenary talks were presented throughout the day, covering topics such as positive thinking, illusions of touch, body image, and even how your diet can help to make you more attractive.
The event was the result of a joint effort by psychologists from the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, UTAR, Sunway University, HELP University College, Monash University Sunway Campus and International Medical University. Professor Peter Mitchell, Dean of Science and Director of Studies at the School of Psychology at UNMC said, “We are delighted and honoured to have hosted the Malaysian Psychology Conference at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus.”
