Two Research Assistants
Applications are invited for two Research Assistant positions based within the School of Psychology. Successful applicants will be granted a scholarship to undertake an MPhil/PhD degree; this scholarship will cover the cost of tuition fees and provide a local stipend. Applicants must possess a 1st or upper 2nd class honours (or equivalent) degree or a Master’s degree in a relevant subject (such as psychology, linguistics, computer science, or cognitive neuroscience), an appropriate English Language qualification and evidence of an aptitude for research. Each position is for three years (1 year probation in the first instance).
Successful candidates will be involved in one of two research projects:
1. Visual Word Processing in Bilingualism
A research project investigating the brain mechanisms underlying language processing in bilinguals. The position will be based at the Malaysia Campus, with the possibility to travel to the UK to conduct research. Skills in experimental psychology and statistical methods are essential. Knowledge of psycholinguistics, bilingualism research and electroencephalography (EEG) will be advantageous. As well as a good command of Bahasa Malaysia, both spoken and written, proficiency in a third language would also be advantageous.
2. Mechanisms of Attention Operating within Working Memory
A research project examining psychological and neural mechanisms of directing attention within working memory/internal thought. The position will be based at the Malaysia Campus, with the possibility to travel to the UK or USA to conduct research. Skills in experimental psychology and statistical methods are essential. Strong technical/computer skills (including programming experience, particularly with Matlab) and/or prior experience with cognitive neuroscience techniques (EEG/MEG/fMRI/etc.) would also be advantageous.
Successful candidates will be expected to assist academic staff with teaching duties and laboratory demonstrations. Candidates are also expected to meet the following minimum requirements:
- Possess a good command of English, both spoken and written.
- Possess good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Other necessary attributes include the ability to work independently and to be proactive and resourceful.
