Dr Chuma Owuamalam has been selected as winner of the 2012 International Travel Award of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues to present his cutting-edge research on the ‘chilling effect’ of metastereotyping among members of disadvantaged groups at the Society’s convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Described as an exceptional contribution to our understanding of the psychology of disadvantaged group membership by the selection committee, Chuma and his associate at Royal Holloway University London showed that focusing on the negative stereotypes that a powerful outgroup is believed to hold of one’s own group is sufficient to undermine beliefs about future employment prospects and actual persistence at job-seeking.
