Assistant Professor Guy Burton has published an article on the emergence and impact of the Palestinian youth movement which took to the streets during the Arab Uprising in 2011. The article was published in Third World Quarterly, a highly regarded peer-reviewed journal in the field of political science, development studies and international relations.
In the article, Dr Burton examined how young Palestinians living in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza worked together to create a youth movement which transcended the Green Line between Israel and the occupied territories and which challenged the ruling elites in both. Dr Burton carried out fieldwork which included interviews with participants in the movement during his postdoctoral position at Birzeit University in occupied Palestine several years ago. The research was part of a wider project funded by the Gemany-based Rosa Luxemburg Foundation to find alternative forms of development for the Palestinian people. The abstract is available at the following link.Dr Burton’s interest in the Palestinian issue constitutes a core part of his wider research and teaching agenda on the politics and international relations Middle East – a subject he teaches a final year undergraduate course on in the School.
