The Harry J Benda Prize for 2020 has been awarded to a book by Sumit Mandal of PHIR. The book is titled Becoming Arab: Creole Histories and Modern Identity in the Malay World and was published by Cambridge University Press in 2018. For more on the book, please see here. Initiated in 1977, the Benda Prize is given annually by the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) based in the United States to recognise outstanding scholarship in Southeast Asian Studies. The Benda Prize will be presented at an awards ceremony to be held in Boston on the 20 March 2020, in conjunction with the annual AAS Conference.
