[July 3, 2024] – The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) and the China University of Petroleum (CUP) today reaffirmed their strong partnership during a landmark visit by CUP's President and delegation to the UNM Semenyih campus. The visit culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen ties that lead to research partnership, enhancing teaching and learning collaboration and establishing a robust student exchange programme. This further solidifies both universities’ commitment to academic excellence, research innovation, and cross-cultural exchange.

A distinguished delegation from CUP, led by President Professor Jin Yan and Deputy Director of International Office Professor Feng Yongcun, engaged in productive discussions with UNM Interim Provost and CEO Professor David FitzPatrick and Vice-Provost for Research and Knowledge Exchange (RKE) Professor Mohd Shahir Liew. The visit facilitated an exchange of ideas on potential collaborative projects, and exploration of innovative research facilities while fostering meaningful interactions between the two institutions.

As part of the cultural exchange and engagement activities, the CUP team had the opportunity to meet and interact with UNM's Chinese postgraduate students. The informal session fostered a lively discussion and exchange of experiences, providing valuable insights into student life and academic pursuits at UNM.

The partnership will see both universities collaborate across various fronts including:

  • Joint Research Initiatives: The institutions will explore potential areas for joint research in energy-related fields, leveraging their complementary strengths and expertise.

  • Enhanced Teaching and Learning Collaboration: The MoU outlines a framework for collaboration in teaching and learning, including the development of joint academic programmes, faculty exchange, and the sharing of best practices in pedagogy and curriculum design.

  • Robust Student Exchange Programme: A key focus of the MoU is the establishment of a comprehensive student exchange programme, providing students from both institutions with opportunities to study abroad, broaden their cultural horizons, and gain international experience.

  • Knowledge Sharing and Capacity Building: The collaboration will facilitate knowledge sharing and capacity building through workshops, seminars, and conferences, fostering a vibrant academic exchange between CUP and UNM.

The visit and MoU signing marks a significant milestone in the relationship between CUP and UNM. Both institutions are poised to embark on a journey of transformative collaboration that will benefit their students, faculty, and the broader academic and industrial communities in China, Malaysia, and beyond.
