On 14 October 2024, the University of Nottingham Malaysia’s School of Economics, in partnership with its co-organiser, the World Bank Group, proudly announced the winners of the Nottingham-World Bank Asian Economics Essay Competition 2024.

Organised by UNM, this yearly essay competition has been open to all pre-university and high school students in Malaysia since 2014. In 2024, it was extended to Asia for the first time, engaging students across the region and encouraging them to explore pressing contemporary issues within the field of economics. For this year’s theme, participants were invited to critically examine the role of government in facilitating the green transition. The competition challenged students to craft a forward-thinking policy agenda, incorporating potential uses of fiscal and monetary policies, alongside macroeconomic and regulatory practices, to promote a sustainable and net-zero future.

This year we received 128 essay submissions from students from seven countries—Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. Winners of the competition are awarded RM1,000 for first place, RM800 for second place, RM600 for third place, and RM350 each for three consolation prizes.

Here are the list of winners for this year’s Nottingham-World Bank Asian Economics Essay Competition 2024:

  • First prize winners: Yang Haoran and Yang Haorui from Methodist College Kuala Lumpur
  • Second prize winner: Kangmin Kim from British International School Kuala Lumpur
  • Third prize winner: Chen Yen Yeu from Sri Kuala Lumpur International School

  • Bryan Lue Bing Yang from Taylor's College

  • Syeda Ameerah Hoque from Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar

“Participating in the competition was a meaningful experience that not only helped us to strengthen our research and writing skills but also gave us a deeper understanding on the topic of green transition,” says winners Yang Haoran and Yang Haorui. “Looking back, the process of brainstorming ideas, building a framework before writing, and revising multiple drafts to address gaps in our analysis were essential parts for us in shaping well-rounded economic solutions.”

A huge congratulations once again to the winners of this year’s Nottingham-World Bank Asian Economics Essay Competition 2024! Your hard work and insightful contributions have truly set you apart, and we are proud to recognise your achievements.
