For the first time in history, the University of Nottingham will hold a virtual graduation ceremony for all three of its campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia. The event will be made even more memorable with the attendance of Nottingham alumni and ambassadors in this 24-hour global celebration.
The virtual festival will kick off at 10am Malaysian time on 24 July 2020 with various activities online to mark the celebration. Nottingham staff from all three campuses, students and alumni from across the world will share their congratulatory messages and advice with the class of 2020.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the university was unable to hold its usual graduation ceremony like it does every year. So this year, students will graduate in absentia and their certificates will be sent to them.
According to graduand Nadia Nadine Mohamad Shaharul, “UNM will always have a place in my heart for the people, the experience, and the self-growth. Saying goodbye is hard, but it's just the beginning of a new exciting chapter and needless to say it would have been great to do all this in person with our loved ones and lecturers but we will patiently wait for that chance when it is safe again.” Nadine graduates from BSc Finance, Accounting and Management.
The virtual celebration
The celebrations starts with a online graduation speech by UNM’s Provost and CEO, Professor Graham Kendall at 10am, messages from the Dean and staff from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences from 10am to 12noon, messages from the Dean and staff from the Faculty of Science and Engineering from 1pm to 3pm and we will end the celebration with messages from University of Nottingham Chancellor Baroness Young of Hornsey OBE and Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West at 5pm.
There will also be sharing various recorded messages from University of Nottingham Malaysia, mainly from Management Board members, VIPs, staff, Student Association President, friends of the University, alumni, students and others, to celebrate this special day. Follow the event on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram – with the hashtag #UNMGraduation and #WeAreUoN.
Professor Graham Kendall, CEO and Provost of UNM said, “Graduation is one of the highlights of the academic year and I always feel immensely proud and honoured when I stand on the stage, address you and confer your degree. I will miss being able to perform this role this year, although I hope to see you when we invite you to a future graduation ceremony once the pandemic allows us to do that.”
“Just because we are not holding a physical graduation ceremony does not detract from what you have achieved. All the staff at the University feel immensely proud of you and our thoughts and best wishes will be with you on 24 July as we celebrate you becoming a graduate of this great university.”
