University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) held its second Staff Engagement Day on 26 March 2019 after a successful run for the first time in 2018. Led by its Human Resources department, the event saw team efforts between departments and participations from both staff and students.
UNM Provost and CEO Professor Graham Kendall graced the event, witnessed by other senior members of the University. Zamidah Zainal from Group Corporate Communication and Administration of Boustead Holdings Berhad also attended the event.
Themed #makeachange, it is an encouragement to staff to make small changes to help themselves, which in turn would result in a healthier workplace. The small changes could be from losing weight to improve fitness to better financial management for better ease of mind, which then resulted in a happier and healthier workforce. It is also a day for staff to spend some time away from their desk, to socialise with colleagues and to increase their awareness on physical, mental and financial wellbeing. It is also part of the University’s effort to bring services and products to campus as a one stop centre for staff to “shop” and “do their errands”.
Several service providers were on site to offer and introduce their services and products. Various activities were organised that range from games, health and financial planning talks, quizzes, health checks, fitness challenge, beauty and care.
The event hosted Boustead Properties, Affin Bank, Bank Rakyat, HSBC, Mary Kay, Caring Pharmacy, Celebrity Fitness, Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN), Employees Provident Fund (EPF), Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional (PTPTN), Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad (ASNB), Lembaga Zakat Selangor, and Tabung Haji. The health check corners were a complete hit with staff members as various services were available. Complimentary health and dental checks were available courtesy of KPJ Kajang Hospital and Klinik Pergigian Sungai Besi Indah respectively. Optimax Eye Specialist conducted free eye tests which includes screening for glaucoma. Caring Pharmacy offered bone density test as well as smoking cessation service. This is indeed in line with University’s objective in ensuring that staff members keep their health in check.
List of invited speakers includes Dr Onn Akbar Ali, Consultant Cardiologist from KPJ Kajang who gave a talk on “Avoiding and Surviving Heart Attack” and Encik Zainal Abidin from EPF who talked about Financial and Retirement Plan.
Officers from the Inland Revenue Board were there as well to render assistance to staff requiring guidance in filing their annual tax returns. This is a continued collaboration between the Human Resource’s Department and LHDN for the past ten years.
Highlights of the event did not stop there as various food trucks were invited to participate in the event. It is an opportunity to enjoy different spread of food and delicacies apart from those readily available on campus. The Staff Engagement event is set to be a regular event to be organised on campus as it is recognised as one of the platforms to engage and create awareness to staff on issues that are important to them both professionally and personally. According to UNM Human Resources Director Lizdawati Abdul Rahman: “This was a very special day for all staff as they get a platform to enrich their knowledge in many areas as well as to mingle with University family of 650 staff.
