Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) Parliamentary Advisor Dr Victoria Ann Hasson, who is also an alumna of the University of Nottingham, delivered a lecture with the former Labour Party member Sir Hugh Bayley to staff and students at the University on 16 October.

The interactive lecture titled: Why Parliament Matters for students was organised by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

According to University of Nottingham Malaysia Dean of Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Professor Lee Chew Ging: “We are very pleased to host high-level speakers, who are engaging and bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience to our University community.”

“It was an opportunity for our students especially to learn more about the UK Parliament and to see it within the context of their studies,” Professor Lee added.

Sir Bayley who was a Labour Party member from 1992 to 2015, served under Tony Blair as a Government Minister. He was responsible for poverty reduction in the UK.

Dr Hasson heads WFD’s Political Economy Analysis process leading an initiative to innovate the learning experiences and she provides advisory support to Asia Africa and Latin America programme teams. She graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2004 with Hispanic & Latin American Studies and holds a doctorate in parliamentary procedure and democracy from the University of Sheffield.

The lecture was led by Dr Hasson followed by a joint question and answer session with Sir Hugh Bayley. Both speakers shared and discussed their experiences of working with the Federal Parliament of Malaysia and recounted the examples and challenges they experienced.
The visit of Dr Hasson and Sir Bayley to the University of Nottingham Malaysia is part of the series of knowledge sharing and capacity building engagements with stakeholders in Malaysia, including an MP advocacy programme at the Malaysian Parliament, which was supported by the British High Commission in Malaysia.

The session ended with networking and engagement between representatives from British High Commission to Malaysia, students and staff. The speakers and their teams were also taken for a campus tour.

Among the attendees are University of Nottingham Malaysia Faculty of Arts and Science Professor Lee Chew Ging and Head of School of Politics, History and International Relations Professor William Case, from the British High Commission Head of Marketing & GREAT Campaign Allison Collingridge, and other senior academic and administrators from the University.
