Events around the world are set to mark the international impact of the University of Nottingham Malaysia.
Recognised globally for delivering the very best of a British Education in Malaysia, the University is pioneering research to; improve healthcare, provide sustainable methods of food production, and protect our environment. Through international collaboration this research is now having a real impact on the people of Malaysia, and beyond.
The campus, near to Kuala Lumpur, has been chosen to host delegates from the British Council’s Going Global Conference and further celebrations are set to be held both in the UK and across Asia.
Professor Graham Kendall, Provost and Chief Executive Office, University of Nottingham Malaysia, said: “The University is once again pushing the boundaries of global higher education, with new initiatives that enable our world-renowned academics to reach out into ASEAN and beyond.
We are celebrating our ground-breaking programme partnerships in Singapore, Laos, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, our five-star teaching and the research which is having a real-world impact on the societies, economies and culture of Malaysia and ASEAN.”
The University of Nottingham was the first to establish a UK overseas campus in Malaysia almost 20 years ago. It is now among the highest performers in independent teaching assessments in Malaysia and recognised for its academic breadth, the quality of education and student experience. It has recently celebrated its 10,000th graduate.
Professor Deborah Hall, Vice-Provost (Research and Knowledge Exchange) said: “Our researchers have a particular focus in addressing the challenges facing Southeast Asia and applying their research capabilities to ensure a positive impact on economic, social and cultural wellbeing within ASEAN and the broader region.
“Particular research strengths include securing the future of food through the discovery and cultivation of new and underutilised crops, advancing new ways to save lives through new techniques to detect breast cancer, and working with the environment to preserve the ecology and conversation of elephants in their natural habitat.
All this would not be possible without our capable and dedicated staff and students. People are at heart of our research strategy. These talented people underpin our capability in delivering high quality research and impact to our local and international community.”
Nottingham Malaysia Day
On Tuesday 24 April teams of researchers will head to London for the pre-departure reception for Going Global and a wider debate on the UK’s role in ASEAN alongside the British Malaysian Society.
On Wednesday 25 April the University is celebrating Nottingham Malaysia Day with student festivals of culture, games, dancing and food before Professor Kendall sets out his vision for the future.
Going Global will take place in Kuala Lumpur between 2-4 May 2018. A special visit to campus will be part of celebrations along with a dinner including a Malaysian-themed experiment from Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff and inspirational presentations from researchers on elephant conservation, mathematics, cancer research and how Malaysian-grown fruit offers the key to curing disease.
Thursday 3 May sees the launch of the University’s campaign Discover our world to raise the profile of the University of Nottingham Malaysia, and its ground-breaking research – including elephant conservation, cancer research and securing the future of our food.
The end of the week will see further events in Thailand where the University will celebrate its 20 year partnership with Thammasat University. Established in 1996, the partnership has developed highly skilled engineers across all disciplines and now has over 600 alumni.
