A University of Nottingham graduate has been appointed as a Federal Court Judge. Datuk Prasad Abraham, 65, a Malaysian national, was former President of Nottingham Malaysian Graduates Association, following his law degree at The University of Nottingham, UK.
He took his oath of office as a Federal Court Judge at a ceremony presided by Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V.
Since graduating in the early 1970s, Dr Abraham continued his links with the University and School of Law and in 2008 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate for his outstanding contributions.
He was also conferred with The University of Nottingham Alumni Laureate Lifetime Achievement Award 2015.
Head of School of Law Professor Nigel White said: “Prasad Abraham's many friends in the School of Law are delighted to hear that he has been appointed to the Federal Court in Malaysia.
“Prasad has been a good friend to the school over many years, most recently as an Honorary Professor, and we have benefited greatly from his wise counsel. We wish him every success.”
The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus CEO and Provost Professor Graham Kendall said: “Datuk Prasad holds one the highest positions in the judiciary of Malaysia. The University is immensely proud of his achievement. Other than the late HRH Sultan Azlan Shah, Datuk Prasad is the only other Malaysian alumni from the University of Nottingham to have reached this position.”
“Datuk Prasad is a close friend of the university, who has been, and remains supportive, of the University of Nottingham both in Malaysia and in the UK. We are very pleased to be able to offer our congratulations on this significant achievement,” Professor Kendall said.
Dr Abraham arrived at The University of Nottingham UK in 1971 to study Law. He contributed to the University’s alumni as President of The University of Nottingham Malaysian Graduates Association and continued to be an active member of the association.
In the judicial arena, he was appointed as a Judicial Commissioner of the Malaysian high court in 2009. A year later he was appointed as a High Court Judge and was subsequently appointed to the Appeals Court.
