The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) alumni from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering had a reunion with previous professors, course mates and industrial partners of the department at a networking luncheon co-hosted by the School and Crops for the Future Research Centre. Alumni from as far back as 2006 attended the networking session.
The Alumni-Industrial partner networking session included UNMC Vice-Provost (Research and Knowledge Exchange) Professor Claire O’Malley, Crops for the Future CEO Professor Sayed Azam–Ali, Gryphon Energy Chairman Datuk Nagendran Nadarajah, who was represented by his son Dato’ Alex, and Crops for the Future research theme head Dr Ebrahim Jahanshiri.
Professor Sayed gave a talk on the role and agenda of CFF in promoting alternative crops and its achievements in leading many initiatives at an international level, while Dr Ebrahim gave a briefing on how engineers and software designers are able to participate in CropBASE research theme in CFF. Both the presentations were eye openers especially for our alumni, with regards to the true status of food security worldwide.
According to Dino Isa, academic at the School of Electirical and Electronic Engineering: “Our alumni still communicate with us after all these years. They started off as undergraduates, and became our colleagues, research collaborators and industrial partners. Most importantly, they remain our friends and staunch supporters of the department and University, maintaining a relationship that stood the test of time and the ups and downs of life and its imperfections. We are so very proud of our former students, and how they graduated to become truly useful and kind human beings. We hope that this event, bringing together former students and current industrial partners will lead to real innovations and to a better future for us all.
According to UNMC Vice-Provost (Research and Knowledge Exchange) Professor Claire O’Malley: The University of Nottingham alumni makes up a high calibre network in corporate and research fields. Those who gathered with us for this networking event are a testament to their success and their eagerness not only to develop themselves further but to remain as active players in knowledge exchange among their peers.
Also gracing the event were UNMC Dean of Engineering Professor Andy Chan, Telekom Malaysia GM of Risk Management Azizul Rahman, Infineon Melaka Principal Staff Engineer Khairi John, Wood Group Automation and Control Technical Authority Mr Rahul Gupta, UNMC Head of Business Engagement and Innovation Services Professor Denny Ng, UNMC former Dean of Engineering Professor Michael Cloke and Intelligent Systems Research Group Head Dr Rajprasad Rajkumar.

Notes to editors: The University of Nottingham has 43,000 students and is ‘the nearest Britain has to a truly global university, with a “distinct” approach to internationalisation, which rests on those full-scale campuses in China and Malaysia, as well as a large presence in its home city.’ (Times Good University Guide 2016). It is also one of the most popular universities in the UK among graduate employers and the winner of ‘Outstanding Support for Early Career Researchers’ at the Times Higher Education Awards 2015. More than 97% of research at The University of Nottingham is recognised internationally and it is 8th in the UK by research power according to the Research Excellence Framework 2014. It has been voted the world’s greenest campus for four years running, according to Greenmetrics Ranking of World Universities.
Impact: The Nottingham Campaign, its biggest-ever fundraising campaign, is delivering the University’s vision to change lives, tackle global issues and shape the future.
