University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Professor Andy Chan was invited as a guest speaker at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) in the UK.

ECMWF is a research institute and a 24x7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its 34 Member States. It is an independent intergovernmental organisation supported by most of the nations of Europe and is based at Shinfield Park, Reading, United Kingdom. It operates one of the largest supercomputer complexes in Europe and is the world's largest archive of numerical weather prediction data.

Professor Chan made a presentation, titled “Computational studies of 2013 Biomass-burning haze event in South Southeast Asia”, to meterological researchers from across Europe.

He was hosted by ECMWF Senior Scientist Dr Mark Parrington.

Professor Chan is a researcher in the fields of urban pollution, including transboundary haze. He heads the Seven Southeast Asian Study Mission (7-SEAS programme), a grassroots scientific collaboration between government agencies, universities and research institutes with NASA, The National Center for Atmospheric Research, ONR around the Asean region. He is also conceptualised the University’s aerospace research initiative as the Director of Asia Aerospace City Research and Technology Centre. He was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Engineering since September last year.

“We ensure that our research is close to the industry and relevant to global issues, and I was very honoured to be able to present to senior researchers and experts in the field on the topic on haze, which is unique to Southeast Asia.” Professor Chan said.

“We try to introduce our research expertise and industry knowledge to our students in the classroom as well. In education, we strongly believe in the exchange of knowledge and continuous learning.” Professor Chan added.

Notes to editors: The University of Nottingham has 43,000 students and is ‘the nearest Britain has to a truly global university, with a “distinct” approach to internationalisation, which rests on those full-scale campuses in China and Malaysia, as well as a large presence in its home city’ (Times Good University Guide 2016). It is also one of the most popular universities in the UK among graduate employers and the winner of ‘Outstanding Support for Early Career Researchers’ at the Times Higher Education Awards 2015. It is ranked in the world’s top 75 by the QS World University Rankings 2015/16, and 8th in the UK by research power according to the Research Excellence Framework 2014. It has been voted the world’s greenest campus for four years running, according to Greenmetrics Ranking of World Universities.

Impact: The Nottingham Campaign, its biggest-ever fundraising campaign, is delivering the University’s vision to change lives, tackle global issues and shape the future.
