The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC), together with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UITM) and the National Space Agency (ANGKASA) co-hosted the 10th 7-SEAS International Workshop of Technologies and Sciences on Transboundary Haze 2016 at ANGKASA from 21 to 24 September 2016.
Initiated in 2007, through a process with the United States Department and governments in Southeast Asia, National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) international field offices, the 7 South East Asian Studies (7-SEAS) seeks to perform interdisciplinary research and develop a wide-ranging Southe East Asian scientific data network in the field of aerosol-meteorology and climate interaction in the region extending from Java through Peninsular Malaysia and Southeast Asia to Taiwan.
Aerosol-meteorology is the study of effects of tiny particles in the environment and its impact on weather and climate, which provides an in-depth study on haze and other factors which affects the environment.
Every year a scientific workshop to share technology know-how is organised to for the scientists in the region and UNMC is was fortunate privileged to be hosting this year’s event. State-of the-art technologies on issues like air quality, haze, clouds, fires, remote sensing will bewere discussed. The workshop is hosteding more than 100 participants from all over the world.
“It is indeed an honour for Malaysia, in particular UNMC, to be part of this very important international scientific programme and more so to host an event for NASA. We aim to use this as a scientific platform to initiate closer collaboration with other Asean countries on air quality technologies. The knowledge shared will be very useful to tackle our pressing air quality problems,” said Professor Andy Chan, the Chairman of the event and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at UNMC.
The workshop was officiated by Deputy Director General of Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation, Malaysia (MOSTI) Yang Berbahagia Professor Madya Ramzul Dambul, Deputy Director General of Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation, Malaysia (MOSTI) and will featured international speakers from NASA, USA, Singapore, Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
The 7-SEAS programme is unique by itself as it is a grassroots scientific collaboration between government agencies, universities and research institutes with NASA, NCAR, ONR around the Asean region. This platform offers a fantastic opportunity to work together in the spirit of improving well-being in the region.
Researchers at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) have been actively studying the effect of transboundary haze and urban pollution in collaboration with NASA, which is headed by Professor Andy Chan. The project is called Seven Southeast Asian Study Mission or 7-SEAS.

Notes to editors: The University of Nottingham has 43,000 students and is ‘the nearest Britain has to a truly global university, with a “distinct” approach to internationalisation, which rests on those full-scale campuses in China and Malaysia, as well as a large presence in its home city.’ (Times Good University Guide 2016). It is also one of the most popular universities in the UK among graduate employers and the winner of ‘Outstanding Support for Early Career Researchers’ at the Times Higher Education Awards 2015. More than 97% of research at The University of Nottingham is recognised internationally and it is 8th in the UK by research power according to the Research Excellence Framework 2014. It has been voted the world’s greenest campus for four years running, according to Greenmetrics Ranking of World Universities.
Impact: The Nottingham Campaign, its biggest-ever fundraising campaign, is delivering the University’s vision to change lives, tackle global issues and shape the future.
