The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus has emerged as champions at the 2016 ICAEW Regional Business Case Challenge. The annual competition attracted 30 teams from leading universities in the region, where the participants are given a case study and tasked to resolve a business situation.
Held on May 24 at the Nexus Connection Grand Ballroom in Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur, the panel of judges were industry experts from The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), BDO, PwC and Maybank. They observed how the participants work as a team, communicate with one another and manage strict deadlines in deciding the winner.
The winning team from the Nottingham University Business School (NUBS) Malaysia comprised of final-year students Fabiolla Netto, Evonne Chen May Yie, Ngam Li Hsian and Ian Lim Chen Wei, and second-year students Roy Lam Phoung and Tan Jia Wei. They raised the champions trophy, took home medals and won a trip to visit the ICAEW Chartered Accountants' Hall. Team captain Fabiolla Netto was also crowned the Best Speaker, winning him RM500 in cash prize.
Fabiolla said, "We strongly believe that having a great team is one of the key drivers of success. Through this journey we saw the importance of building team dynamics and finding ways to use each others' strengths to add value to the team. We learnt to be resilient to change and to trust fellow team members. We would like to also thank our mentor, Dr Pek Chuen Khee, and the Business School, for all their support."
Dr Pek, a Senior University Teaching Fellow at NUBS Malaysia added, "Soft-skills are hard requirements, which can be developed through student competitions like the ICAEW Regional Business Case Challenge, which, apart from being a platform to network with various corporate organisations, also helps develop creativity and confidence amongst students”.
“Students from The University of Nottingham are well rounded, mastering the arts of academic achievements and are also competitive in competitions and sporting activities. At Nottingham, we believe that a holistic education should include our graduates’ ability to lead, manage, communicate and address challenges of the less privileged,” said Professor Christine Ennew, CEO and Provost of UNMC
A prelude to the ICAEW Challenge was UNMC's very own Christine Ennew Business Challenge Trophy 2016, which was held in February 2016. Sponsored by Ken-Rich Corporation, it was also in conjunction with UNMC’s 15th anniversary.
“Students from The University of Nottingham are well rounded, mastering the arts of academic achievements and are also competitive in competitions and sporting activities. At Nottingham, we believe that a holistic education should include our graduates’ ability to lead, manage, communicate and address challenges of the less privileged,” said Professor Christine Ennew, CEO and Provost of UNMC.

Notes to editors: The University of Nottingham has 43,000 students and is ‘the nearest Britain has to a truly global university, with a “distinct” approach to internationalisation, which rests on those full-scale campuses in China and Malaysia, as well as a large presence in its home city.’ (Times Good University Guide 2016). It is also one of the most popular universities in the UK among graduate employers and the winner of ‘Outstanding Support for Early Career Researchers’ at the Times Higher Education Awards 2015. It is ranked in the world’s top 75 by the QS World University Rankings 2015/16, and 8th in the UK by research power according to the Research Excellence Framework 2014. It has been voted the world’s greenest campus for four years running, according to Greenmetrics Ranking of World Universities.
Impact: The Nottingham Campaign, its biggest-ever fundraising campaign, is delivering the University’s vision to change lives, tackle global issues and shape the future.
