Malaysia Campus hosts Tri Campus Arts Festival

kc article

The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus hosts University of Nottingham’s annual Tri Campus Arts Festival, a major theatre festival spanning all three Nottingham campuses and the biggest to date, involving students from Malaysia, China, and the United Kingdom.

The Nottingham Tri Campus Arts Festival will take place in the Malaysia campus in Semenyih this year. It is a five-day event, beginning from 8 June until 12 June. The performances include Kampung Chekhov, a Malaysian adaptation of Chekhov’s comic works “On the Harmful Effects of Vaping”, a one-man play done in lecture style; “The Proposal”, a tale about wooing a difficult lady and The Orang-utan, a story about a young widow dealing with her husband’s early death. The UK campus will be performing Oedipus, the story of King Thebes from Greek Mythology. And the China campus is bringing us Mr. Donkey, a tragi-comedy about trying to game the education system for local gain.

The biggest production is A Thousand And One Nights, led and performed by both university staff and students from The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, in collaboration with students from both the China and UK Campuses.

The Festival was organised by Dr. Derek Irwin, Head of School of English at UNMC, and Dr. Sergio Comacho, Director of Performing Arts. Both were also responsible for UNMC’s theatre production of The Mikado which was performed at Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre, and William Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, which was performed both at UNMC and Lakeside Arts in The University of Nottingham UK.

“This is an incredibly exciting opportunity to bring our three campuses together. I believe strongly in the collaborative nature of a performance, as even minimalist plays require the assistance of a lights and stage crew. The teamwork, passion and performance of our students is inspiring and amazing – their talent in song, dance, music and acting should not be missed,” Dr Irwin said.

UNMC students from engineering, business, English, and in fact all of the disciplines across the campuses, bring a diversity of talents and ideas, collaborating in these performances.

Provost and CEO of UNMC, Christine Ennew welcomes the public, as “Performance art is an important part of all of our cultures, and it brings us all closer by helping us to understand our differences and celebrate our common humanity.”

The Tri Campus Arts Festival is a major event at The University of Nottingham as it promotes collaboration among global communities, as well as a sense of unity. UNMC hosts the Tri Campus Arts Festival for the 2nd time and among those performing at the A Thousand and One Nights at the Official Opening of University of Nottingham’s Tri Campus Games which runs from June 12 to 17, are the Chamber Choir from The University of Nottingham UK.

Notes to editors: The University of Nottingham has 43,000 students and is ‘the nearest Britain has to a truly global university, with a “distinct” approach to internationalisation, which rests on those full-scale campuses in China and Malaysia, as well as a large presence in its home city.’ (Times Good University Guide 2016). It is also one of the most popular universities in the UK among graduate employers and the winner of ‘Outstanding Support for Early Career Researchers’ at the Times Higher Education Awards 2015. It is ranked in the world’s top 75 by the QS World University Rankings 2015/16, and 8th in the UK by research power according to the Research Excellence Framework 2014. It has been voted the world’s greenest campus for four years running, according to Greenmetrics Ranking of World Universities.

Impact: The Nottingham Campaign, its biggest-ever fundraising campaign, is delivering the University’s vision to change lives, tackle global issues and shape the future.
