The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) is partnering with Ampang Jaya Badminton Centre (AJBC) to offer scholarships to Malaysian badminton maestros.

The scholarship will be open to upcoming national and state level badminton players who are affiliated with AJBC, and will allow them to study for an undergraduate degree at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, Britain’s leading global university.

“We are pleased to offer this opportunity for further academic excellence to the accomplished junior badminton players in Malaysia,” said Professor Christine Ennew, CEO and Provost of The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus at a press conference to announce this partnership.

“Malaysia has a long tradition of having one of the best badminton teams in the world and as a global university based in Malaysia we would like to ensure that these talented individuals are able to achieve the fullest potential beyond the courts,” Professor Ennew said.

According to Ho Khek Mong, founding partner and managing director of AJBC, it is of great importance to have a structured development plan for exceptional players that would also act as an alternative future pathway for the recruits. While the development plan focuses on creating badminton talent for national and international excellence, it is essential that there are opportunities for players to obtain an education that will serve them well in the longer term. The scheme also provides an option for those reaching the end of their badminton careers to pursue their academic qualifications. With the appointment of Nottingham University as their sole education partner, players’ educational dreams can now become a reality. Education is truly a lifelong process.

The initiative aims to attract leading badminton players who meet the entry requirements of the programmes offered at UNMC in the Faculties of Arts & Social Sciences, Engineering and Science.

This partnership is a pioneering initiative by Ampang Jaya Badminton Club to provide outstanding educational opportunities to ardent and skilful badminton players.

“A global education gives any young person a firm foundation in their future and as badminton players, the potential applicants are well placed to display the true spirit of sportsmanship by way of perseverance and competitiveness which gives them an edge over their peers.

“We hope that our partnership will fuel the passion for badminton among the UNMC community as a result of the opportunities to interact with outstanding exponents of the sport” Professor Ennew said.

Among the key players present at the ceremony today includes Hayom Rumbaka, world ranked 16 and Lee Sheng Mu, world ranked 5 doubles player.
