The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) recently hosted 19 refugees from Myanmar, Iraq and Syria and current students at the Ideas Academy, a school for disadvantaged children.

The 2 day visit included a fun filled agenda of dodge ball, badminton, table tennis, netball, basketball, tug of war, football, swimming, musical performance and dancing. The event was student led and supported by the management of UNMC.

This event was headed by Ahmed Wael, SA Sports officer, who is studying mechanical engineering at UNMC, with the help of a team of student volunteers.

“It was such an eye opening encounter, to be able to interact with students who are not as privileged as we are, yet we connected well and thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company,” Wael said.

“Our holistic education encourages students to contribute towards the society that they live in, and as a university we have a strategic focus towards community engagement and outreach initiatives, for the benefit of all” said Professor Christine Ennew, CEO and Provost of UNMC.

Present at the games, Professor Ennew delivered a speech and participated in the game of tug of war.

“Who would have known that we can learn so much for these teenagers who are so talented and eager to learn and grow. Personally, I felt that it was such a gratifying outreach project for us all,” Wael explained.
