UNMC undergraduate wins Best Poster Presentation Award in an international conference

final-news

Derick Liew, a recent MEng graduate of Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering from The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, won the First Prize Poster Presentation Award out of a total of 36 posters presented by academics, post-doctoral fellows, researchers and postgraduate students at the Second Asia-Oceania Sonochemical Society Conference (AOSS-2) held at Westin Hotel, Kuala Lumpur recently.

Derick presented his poster titled “Characterisation of Pilot-Scale Triple Frequency Ultrasonic Reactor (TFUR) and Validation of its Performance through Physical, Chemical and Simulation Techniques”. This poster presentation was about the outcomes of his final year undergraduate research project supervised by Professor Sivakumar Manickam and Dr Timm Joyce Tiong and it aimed to validate the efficiency of a triple frequency ultrasonic reactor (TFUR) which is useful for conducting various chemical reactions. It provides fundamental yet highly important information about the performance of scaled-up ultrasonic reactor, and a significant role in optimising the incorporation of ultrasound as an energy-efficient-alternative in industrial processing such as water treatment, materials synthesis, pharmaceutical manufacturing and in other industries.

"I am humbled to receive this award as it was the very first research conference I attended and I would like to especially thank Professor Sivakumar for encouraging me to participate in this poster competition although I was not confident to join this poster competition initially,” said Derick Liew.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to both my supervisors, Professor Sivakumar and Dr Timm Joyce Tiong for their supervision and guidance throughout my undergraduate research project. It was my pleasure to be given this opportunity and I am pleased to meet with sonochemical research champions from around the world.

I benefited greatly from their presentations and sharing. It was indeed a very fruitful experience which motivates me and reinforces my confidence to pursue my dream as a researcher in science and engineering,” Derick said.

The judges of this poster competition were made up of three internationally renowned researchers in Sonochemical Society and they were Professor Muthupandian Ashokkumar from University of Melbourne, Australia, Professor Naoya Enomoto from Kyushu University, Japan and Dr. Bogdan Zisu, from RMIT University, Australia.

“According to the judges, Derick was awarded the First Prize as he demonstrated a clear understanding of his work and managed to give an engaging presentation despite being an undergraduate student,” said Professor Sivakumar Manickam.

“Derick was the only undergraduate who participated in this international conference poster competition and his achievement once again proved the role of UNMC in providing global higher education. The Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at UNMC is proud of his achievement and wishes to congratulate him once again.” Professor Sivakumar said.

About Second Asia-Oceania Sonochemical Society Conference (AOSS-2)

Second Asia-Oceania Sonochemical Society Conference (AOSS-2) was chaired by Proffesor Sivakumar Manickam from The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. It successfully gathered 107 researchers and industrial leaders from 61 universities and organisations across Asia, Australia and Oceania, Europe, South America and Africa. These experts are actively engaged in the research areas of sonochemical sciences and applications.
