The Centre for English Language Education (CELE) at The Nottingham University Malaysia Campus offers free English speaking workshops to local secondary schools as part of their Community Outreach Programme which aims to not only deliver a valuable day for the students and but also build a network among local educational practitioners.
“The modern world we live in demand certain skills in our students, skills with which they can not only get by but excel in their academic and career pursuits. One of these skills is the ability to confidently speak in front of an audience. With this in mind we decided to offer the workshops to local schools,” said Mike Groves, New Programme Coordinator at Centre of English Language Education (CELE).
The first of these workshops was held just this weekend at SMK Taman Semarak, Nilai, in conjunction with the school’s Curriculum Carnival. The workshop, which was attended fourth and fifth formers eager to improve their oral presentation skills, began with an interactive, activity-based session on the preparation and delivery of oral presentations which was followed by talks given by the participants themselves. The students thoroughly enjoyed the workshop which they thought was informative as well as fun.
One fifth former, Iman Natasya Abdul Rahman, 17, commented that it helped her prepare for a speech she was going to deliver in a competition on 15 March. Another student, Roshini d/o Lincoln, also 17, found the workshop relevant and very motivating in her pursuit to become a lawyer.
Puan Shazlina Abdul Karim, the Head of Department for Languages/Senior Subject Teacher at SMK Taman Semarak expressed her appreciation for the visit from CELE, “the first from a foreign university,” she says and hoped it would not be the last.
“We’re also hoping to visit them (CELE) on campus soon, to motivate our students,’ she added.
