The University of Nottingham mourns the loss of HRH Sultan Raja Tun Azlan Shah, Sultan of Perak, former Agong and Nottingham alumnus, and the flags at UNMC are flying at half-mast as a mark of respect.
“The Sultan has been a great friend of the University’s, and remains as one of our most prolific alumni. One of our fondest memories was when Nottingham decided to open its campus in Malaysia; His Royal Highness was among the first hands that opened the door during our launch in 2005,” said Professor Christine Ennew, CEO/Provost of The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus.
Nottingham Graduate
HRH Sultan Raja Tun Azlan Shah graduated with a law degree in 1953 from The University of Nottingham, UK. A year later, he was admitted to the English Bar at Lincoln’s Inn.
Having garnered this valuable experience of English law, he returned to Malaysia where he served as the Assistant State Secretary of Perak. He then joined the judicial and legal service of the Federation of Malaya where he served as First Class magistrate and President of the Sessions Court.
In 1986, he was conferred with an honorary degree from The University of Nottingham. Family ties with Nottingham were strong and his son, the late HRH Raja Ashman Shah was also a graduate of the University, from the school of economics.
“Members of the University of Nottingham Graduates Association (Malaysia) are deeply saddened by the passing of Sultan Azlan Shah and will always remember His Royal Highness outstanding contribution in founding alumni relationships among graduates of Nottingham University,” said Goh Hoon Huar, President of The University of Nottingham Graduates Association (Malaysia)
“His Royal Highness lived a life full of inspiration and service to others; through his tremendous contribution towards the development of the State of Perak, his support for education, his contribution to the judicial system as a man of the Law and his renowned love of sports, especially hockey - he will be sadly and deeply missed,” Professor Ennew said.
