The School of Psychology at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) has become the first Psychology course provider outside the UK to receive accreditation from the British Psychological Society (BPS) for its undergraduate programmes. The award was made following a panel visit of BPS representatives to the UNMC recently.
The British Psychological Society is the learned and professional body for psychologists in the United Kingdom, and has been involved in accrediting programmes of education and training in psychology since the 1970s. The Society started to offer the opportunity to apply for accreditation for transnational programmes earlier in 2014.
The accreditation benchmarks the provision offered by the School’s two undergraduate degree courses – BSc Psychology and BSc Psychology & Cognitive Neuroscience – against psychology degrees across the UK. The successful award indicates that the courses support student learning, are well resourced, and cover in depth the curriculum endorsed by the Society which is derived from recommendations of the Quality Assurance Agency.
Accredited undergraduate programmes confer eligibility for the Society’s Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, which is required in order to train and practice in a number of psychology professions in the UK.
The School was commended on various areas of practice, including the excellent research resources available to students on the programmes, the close-knit and nurturing learning community and the level of public engagement aimed at raising the profile of psychology in Malaysia and the region.
“As higher education transforms and transnational delivery grows, the importance of accreditation from relevant national professional bodies will increase as a signal of quality. We are delighted that the BPS has recognised these developments and has provided UNMC with such a significant accolade for the programmes that is delivers,” said Professor Christine Ennew, CEO and Provost of UNMC.
According to Dr Elizabeth Sheppard, Head of School of UNMC’s School of Psychology, “we greatly enjoyed having the opportunity to talk in depth with the panel about our psychology programmes, and the infrastructure which supports them. Our students are very excited about the prospect of graduating with a BPS-accredited degree.”
