The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) will be organising an International Autonomous Hovercraft Design and Make Competition on March 29 at the Malaysia Campus in conjunction with UNMC's Open Day.
Organised by the School of Engineering together with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) UNMC student chapter, the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) UNMC student branch, the UNMC Robotics Society, Engineers without Borders Malaysia, the competition is sponsored by Motorola Solutions Sdn. Bhd, Autoliv, Institution of Mechanical Engineers Malaysia Branch, Sparkle Lite Marketing Sdn Bhd and UNMC Digital Arts Guild.
“The competition aims to inspire young engineers to create innovative designs in an environment which mirrors a real life situation of professional engineers, where time and limited resources affects design processes. It also serves as a great opportunity for participants to apply their critical thinking skills, communications skills and team dynamics and to give participants an experience of using industrial tools and methods,” said Tzer Maan Choo, head of organising committee and a second year engineering student.
This project is a student-led initiative by the student chapter of Institute of Mechanical Engineers, student branch of Institution of Electrical Engineers and Robotics society of UNMC. The team of advisors are Professor Ian Harrison, Dean of School of Engineering, Professor Law Chung Lim, Associate Dean and Dr. Chan Kuan Yoong, Associate Professor.
“50 undergraduate and PhD students from mechanical, electrical, mechatronics have been involved in organising this competition since last October and we are confident that it is going to be popular among students,” said Alireza Parpaei,President of IMechE Student Chapter at UNMC.
This one-day competition will begin at 8 am by an introductory workshops and working principles and coding techniques, conducted by student technical team and will end with the grand race on a designated track at UNMC’s Great Hall where the closing ceremony and award presentations will be held.
The competition is opened to students from other universities in Malaysia and The University of Nottingham Ningbo Campus (UNNC).
There grand prize is RM 1,500, RM 1,000 for 1st runner up, RM 500 for 2nd runner-up. 3 awards of RM100 each will be presented for the most creative designs.
“This maiden competition aspires to be an annual initiative to continuously challenge engineering students to engage in creative and innovative design challenges to introduce new ideas and concepts to the participants” said Dr Chan Kuan Yoong.
