Nottingham academics win Hind Rattan Awards

Professor Sivakumar Manickam and Dr Ramani Bai V, academics at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) were awarded the prestigious Hind Rattan 2014 award by Honourable Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Corporation, Shri. Tariq Anwar at the Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) Congress in New Delhi, India recently.

This award which is translated in English as "Jewel of India" is given to Indian nationals who have made exceptional contributions to society by the NRI Welfare Society of India since 1982 on January 26, the eve of the Independence Day of India.

“At the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, we pride ourselves on the outstanding achievements of our staff and it is always a pleasure to see these achievements recognised through prestigious international awards” said Professor Christine Ennew, CEO and Provost of UNMC.

Hind RattanProfessor Siva was granted the award for his outstanding services, achievements and contributions in his field of research expertise in chemical and nano pharmaceutical process Engineering, to a research group which exploits novel and energy efficient ultrasound and hydrodynamic cavitation to obtain nanomaterials and nanoformulations and looking into the feasibilities of transformations of energy into a commercial scale.

“I am proud to have been the recipient of this award as it recognises the continuous efforts and contributions from the academic and research areas. I am grateful to work with supportive colleagues from academic & research institutions as well as from the industries, as they have supported me in receiving this award,” said Professor Siva.  

In the past, Professor Siva was also the recipient of Innovator of the Year Award (Highly Commended) from IChemE, Malaysia; JSPS Research Award, Japan and Fast Track Young Scientist Award from Department of Science and Technology, India.

Dr Ramani received this award for her outstanding services in water resources and environment engineering and science, and specifically for her work in water quality and developing software and hardware to solve problems in water resources and environment.

“I received this award with great pride for not just my success, but my research team who has supported me with their knowledge and expertise by contributing towards our research project and from the faculty,” said Dr. Ramani.

Prior to this Dr Ramani was also awarded the “Best Citizens of India Award”, by India International Excellence in 2012 for being a successful non-resident of India and rendering service to the chosen field of research and innovation. She also won the British  Special Award Winning Inventor for successful development of  a New Database and Information Management System (DIMS) for Climate Change Studies and Universal Water Quality Index by an Integrated Real-Time Analyser (UNIQ2011). The DIMS also won the “Double Gold British Invention of the Year Award” at the British Invention Show 2011. 

Hind Rattan Award (India) 

This award (translated "Jewel of India") is given to worldwide Indian Diaspora (NRIs) who have made exceptional contributions to the society by the NRI Welfare Society of India since 1982 on the eve of Independence Day of India (26th January). The Hind Rattan Award is given by the NRI Indian Welfare Society. The selection committee includes prominent government officials and diplomats; International President, CBI, Governor and International Secretary. President of India or Prime Minister will present the award.
