Bhamini Bhujun, a PhD student at The Nottingham University Malaysia Campus who conducts research on super capacitators, was crowned EURAXESS Science Slam Winner ASEAN 2014 on 13 November 2014 the Banyan Tree Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand.
5 researchers from the ASEAN region competed at the final of 2nd EURAXESS Science Slam and each finalist presented in 10 minutes about their research work to the audience.
“The Euraxess Science Slam Asean was a very nice experience. Overall, the Bangkok experience was an amazing one. I really enjoyed the challenge.
It is a real privilege to be doing a PhD in UNMC and it is an honour to represent the university in international competitions and it give me more opportunities to excel internationally,“said Bhamini Bhujun.
Bhamini follows in the footsteps of last year’s champion Dr Phanramphoei Frantz who travelled all the way from France to moderate this year’s slam finals. A researcher with Thailand’s National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), Dr Frantz secured a research position with the prestigious Institute Pasteur in Paris following her win last year.
Bhamini will join the winners of the EURAXESS Science Slams Brazil, China, India, Japan and North America for a networking trip to Europe which includes a visit a research lab of their choice anywhere in the European Research Area.
Michael Potroz a specialist in Bioelectromagnetics came in second place while Soumyabrata Dev’s presentation on cloud imaging won him the third place. Both researchers are from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

It is exciting to see Bhamini receive such an honour, which is well deserved. We are confident that other colleagues will be both inspired and challenged by her achievement,“ said Professor Graham Kendall, Vice Provost (Research and Knowledge Transfer) at UNMC.
The event was organised by EURAXESS Links ASEAN, a pan-European project that links up researchers in Europe and ASEAN. The network promotes researcher mobility and cooperation between the scientific communities of the 40 European countries who are members of the EURAXESS – Researchers in Motion initiative and the international research communities in the EURAXESS Links countries.
The EURAXESS Science Slam finals is the closing event of the 2nd EURAXESS Links Conference 2014 which took place in Singapore and Bangkok, Thailand and is organised by the European Commission, to strengthen scientific links between Europe and Southeast Asia.
