University of Nottingham presented RM18,000 to Hospis Malaysia

The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) presented RM18,000 to Hospis Malaysia on the May 30, 2013 at a cheque presentation ceremony held at the headquarters of Hospis Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur.

This cheque presentation ceremony comes shortly after The Nottingham Charity Run 2013, in which Hospis Malaysia was elected as the events official beneficiary. The charity run, an event organised by the students from UNMC’s Ace Society was aimed to raise funds for and spread awareness on the importance of palliative care in today’s society. 

Hospis Malaysia is a charitable organisation that provides professional palliative care treatment for patients suffering from life-limiting illnesses. The services provided by Hospis Malaysia to patients are offered free of charge. Hospis Malaysia depends on public support and its numerous fundraising events to ensure a steady stream of fund inflow to enable continuous and effective running of the hospice.

Tham Su Ming, General Manager of Hospis Malaysia said: “On behalf of everyone here at Hospis Malaysia, I would like to thank all the students who spent many months organising the charity run, for their hard work and commitment towards a noble cause.

They have successfully raised a fantastic amount, and this will go a long way in ensuring we continue to provide the highest quality of professional palliative care that our patients deserve”. 

According to Professor Christine Ennew Pro-Vice-Chancellor/ Provost and CEO of UNMC, “Our students are encouraged to be involved and committed towards contributing towards the society”. 

The event also included a tour around the premises of Hospis Malaysia and the viewing of the facilities made available to its patients.  

The event was also attended by Professor Christine Ennew, Kenneth Koh, Public Relations Manager and Abigail Peter, Public Relations Executive of Hospis Malaysia, Ho Ri Na, Organising Chairperson of Nottingham Charity Run, a 2nd year engineering student at UNMC.

Nottingham Charity Run

Nottingham Charity Run which attracted 805 participants is organised by students from UNMC’s ACE Society, a student body which organises a range of corporate social responsibility programmes. 

The organising team comprises of Hor Ri Na, Chairperson, Vice Chairpersons, Dharsshen M. Chandrasegaran, Shirley Chai Shue Li and Chee Wen Zhi and event manager Tan Choon Hon. 

The event raised funds through a participation fees as well as through sponsorship by Paper Mate, Handi-Art Furniture, BP Healthcare Center, Lysaght Marketing Sdn Bhd, FnB Facilities, Dutch Lady Milk Industries Berhad and Red Bull. 

Last year, UNMC’s ACE Society, organised a cancer awareness week which raised funds for MAKNA with 40 staff and students shaving their heads for cancer awareness. In March last year, RM20,000 was raised to contribute 10,000 meals for the homeless and poor people in collaboration with Kechara Soup Kitchen
