The Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) has announced the outcome of its first, pilot, discipline-based rating exercise D-SETARA. The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus’ Engineering programmes were rated as Tier 4 (“Very Good”) with other institutions receiving ratings between 3 and 5 in the Engineering cluster, and the majority of those obtaining Tier 4 status.
Professor Ian Harrison, Dean of Faculty of Engineering at UNMC commented “This has been a useful exercise for UNMC to engage with D-SETARA in a pilot phase, even though the instrument was not ideal for UK Branch Campuses, specifically in relation to an understanding of how the UK BEng/MEng undergraduate system works. Hopefully the lessons learned will improve the instrument for the next D-SETARA exercise”.
Professor Christine Ennew, Pro-Vice-Chancellor/Provost and CEO of UNMC commented that “UNMCs Engineering courses are highly sought after and we only take the best students. As with our institutional Tier 5 status, the quality of a Nottingham degree as is evidenced by this recent exercise and the campus will continue to provide a high quality British based engineering education.”
The D-SETARA exercise was trialled in a number of fields; namely Hospitality and Tourism, Engineering, Health Sciences and ‘Medicine Dentistry & Pharmacy’. UNMC was not eligible to enter their Pharmacy programme in to the D-SETARA exercise as the programme operates on 2+2 basis and hence does not graduate students in Malaysia.
