The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) will participate in Nottingham’s Life Cycle 2 to raise money for scholarships for its students.
Professor Neville Wylie, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, will be representing UNMC in a cycling team comprised of Nottingham academics and senior management, led by Professor David Greenway, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Nottingham.
The ride in the UK, spans a total of 1,100 miles (1,750km), from Cape Wrath, at the north western tip of Scotland, to Dover, in the south-east of England.
“This is the second of the Vice-Chancellor’s ‘LifeCycles’ I have been on, and I am greatly looking forward to the challenge,” said Professor Wylie.
“Last year’s ride took us from John O’Groats to Lands End – just over 1,000 miles – and brought in some RM1million (£230,000) for the university’s Sue Ryder Centre for Research on Palliative and End of Life Care.”
Life Cycle 2 is devoted to raising aspirations among young people and ensuring that background or life experiences do not limit the ambition of those with the ability to achieve academic excellence.
Professor Wylie also pointed out that “the charity ride this year is very relevant to our campus in Malaysia. The funds generated will be used to extend the scope of our scholarship provision and provide academic opportunities for students from Malaysia and the region whose life experiences have been affected by either environmental or political conditions.
According to the United Nations, 85 percent of those affected by natural disasters between 2000 and 2009 live in the Asia-Pacific region. In early 2012, flooding in the Philippines affected 4.3 million people. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami killed somewhere in the region of 230,000 people, and displaced another 1.7 million: all from countries whose nationals are strongly represented in the student body at UNMC. It is only fitting that the university extends support to gifted young people who might otherwise miss out on a world-class higher education.”
Nottingham’s Life Cycle 2 begins on 23 August, is due to finish on 6 September.
