The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus will host a major international conference on 'Trade, Investment and Production Networks in Asia' at the Kuala Lumpur Teaching Centre from 15th – 16th February.
The conference is organised by the world-leading research institute The Leverhulme Centre for Globalisation and Economic Policy (GEP) and the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus School of Economics. This annual conference is hosted on a rotating basis by the Nottingham campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia and is chaired by Professor David Greenaway, Vice Chancellor of The University of Nottingham.
The GEP conference is a major forum for academic interaction and debate, attracting prestigious speakers from universities across Asia and Europe. The conference includes two invited lectures sponsored by Boustead Holding Bhd and Wiley-Blackwell respectively.
Professor Hall Hill from Australian National University in Canberra will explore the challenges for economic growth and development facing Malaysia in the context of the government’s target to become a High Income Economy.
The second lecture continues this theme and poses the question whether declining trade protectionism in developing countries over recent decades is fact or fiction. The lecture is given by Chris Milner (Professor of International Economics), from The University of Nottingham and takes place at the main campus in Semenyih. Professor Milner is Head of the School of Economics in the UK and has published widely on the topic of international trade. He is among the top five cited authors in his field.
Some 200 participants from Asia and Europe are expected to attend this conference. It is opened to the press and general public. Pre- registration is required via email to camilla.jensen@nottingham.edu.my by February 10, 2012. Notes:
The Nottingham School of Economics (NSE)
The NSE has earned a world-class reputation for its research on a broad range of economic subjects, particularly globalisation, experimental economics and time-series econometrics. Its standing among the elite economics departments in the UK was reinforced by the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, which ranked its “research power” among the top three in the UK. The measurement of “research power” takes into account not only the quality of research but, crucially, the number of staff put forward for inclusion in the RAE. All of its research was classed as of international quality, and 85 per cent was defined as “world-leading” or “internationally excellent” – the top two possible ratings. The School of Economics was established at the Malaysia Campus in 2010, the School is rapidly growing and demand will generate an estimated student population of around 200 by the end of 2012, including undergraduates and PhD researchers.
The Globalisation and Economic Policy Centre (GEP)
The GEP is the major centre in Europe studying the impact of globalisation and economic policy and one of the biggest of its kind in the world. The Centre has an impressive international reputation; its academics have advised the Treasury, the World Bank and WTO. The GEP hosts a range of major conferences on globalisation and related topics as well as: special invited sessions at other conferences; and constantly well subscribed conferences for postgraduate research students and secondary schools.
