Nottingham hosts Malaysian Games spectacular

The University of Nottingham is set to welcome over 5,000 students from 50 universities, as the proud host of the UKs biggest Malaysian sporting event.

The 28th Nottingham Malaysian Games, taking place on Saturday 10 November, will see students compete in a variety of competitions designed to promote healthy sportsmanship and foster ties between Malaysians studying in the UK.

Tournaments will be held at venues across University Park in games as diverse as football, chess, scrabble and snooker, while traditional Malaysian sports such as Congkak, Batu Seremban, Dam Haji and Carrom will also feature CongkakCongkaz during the day.

Bessima Jamal, a second year Medicine student and Vice President of organisers — the Nottingham Malaysian Society, explained: “The best thing about the Games is for people from all over the UK and Ireland to gather in one place, meet new people, network with each other, and have fun.

“The Games combine three major parts of Malaysian culture: a love of sports, traditional food, and the Malaysian spirit of togetherness and unity. These three things make the Games the huge success it has been and always will be, and is the essence of what being a Malaysian is all about.”

Once again supported by the University and the Students’ Union, the Games will be officially opened by Nottingham’s Vice-Chancellor Professor David Greenaway as well as Ministers from the Prime Minister’s Office and Ministry for Youth and Sports, Malaysia.

The University of Nottingham has strong connections with Malaysia after opening a campus there in 2000.

Helen Rylands, Sponsorship Coordinator in the University’s International Office, explained: “We are proud to support such a high-profile event. It’s a huge undertaking, and the students work incredibly hard to ensure that the Games run smoothly.

“Nottingham has a long tradition of welcoming students from Malaysia and remains a popular destination for students. We have fantastic sporting facilities on our award-winning campus, and we’re privileged that the Games continue to be hosted here.”

Main trophies will be awarded for the various events as well as a trophy for the overall champion of the 2012 Games. As well as sporting events, the Malaysian Society is holding a Malaysian Food Festival in the Portland Building and in the Great Hall, Trent Building, where guests will be able to sample traditional Malaysian cuisine.
