New heads of School for University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus recently announced that Professor Lee Chew Ging has been appointed Dean of the Nottingham University Business School (NUBS) Malaysia, Dr. Festo Massawe as Director of Studies of the School of Bioscience and Dr. Elizabeth Sheppard as Director of Studies for the School of Psychology.

“I am pleased to announce the internal promotions of colleagues who are highly experienced and who have proven academic excellence in their fields of study and research,” said Professor Ian Pashby, CEO & Provost of The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus.

“I am confident that they will continue to excel in their careers and successfully lead their teams in order to maintain our world class teaching standards,” Professor Pashby said.

Professor Lee Chew Ging

Professor Lee joined UNMC in 2000 as part of the pioneering group staff who joined UNMC - and the Business School in their first year. In March 2011, he was promoted to the position of Professor of Quantitative Methods.

As Dean, he heads NUBS Malaysia and is responsible for providing leadership which promotes academic achievement and research excellence within the School. He is also responsible for the development of stakeholder relations primarily involving research collaborators and industry leaders.

Professor Lee is also involved in the development of new programmes as well as overseeing  quality assurance and standards. He will also oversee the professional development of academic staff in NUBS Malaysia. Currently, the School has 42 full-time academic staff to support the activities of around 1000 postgraduate and undergraduate students. In order to maintain the low student-staff ratio, the number of full-time academic staff will be expanded to around 48 staff in 2013. 

Currently he is a member of the Senate and an Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning of The University of Nottingham. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of Chartered Management Institute which are professional bodies based in the UK.

His research interests include sports economics, economics of development and economics of tourism.  His research papers have been published in many reputable academic journals.

Dr. Festo Massawe

Dr. Festo Massawe, an Associate Professor in Plant Biotechnology, joined the School of Biosciences at UNMC in 2006 as Deputy Director of Studies. In this role, he worked closely with the university management and administrators to establish the School of Biosciences at UNMC and expand its teaching and research programmes extensively since its inception in September 2006.

In his new role, as the head of the school, he is leading the development of the School across its research and teaching activities. Dr. Massawe is also responsible for setting and  maintaining quality standards across the School. He is also working with colleagues in  Malaysia, UK and China to establish new research partnerships both locally and globally and across other academic disciplines.

Dr. Massawe is actively involved in research in the areas of whole plant physiology, plant genetics and breeding and biotechnology tools related to the improvement of crop plants. He has great interest in research for development and promotion of underutilised plant species . Dr. Massawe is closely involved in the development of Crops for the Future Research Centre, a global centre for research and development of underutilised plants  which is located adjacent to UNMC.

Dr. Elizabeth Sheppard

Dr. Elizabeth Sheppard, former Associate Professor and Deputy Director of Studies at the School of Psychology at UNMC holds a masters degree in Psychological Research Methods and a PhD at the University of Nottingham, UK. Dr. Sheppard joined UNMC in 2009 when the School of Psychology first started at UNMC.

As Director of Studies, she is responsible for supervising the research and teaching activities within the School. She will also be involved in quality assurance of current programs and the development of new programs as the School expands. She will oversee the development of research relationships both locally and globally, and lead the School in activities to promote psychology within Malaysia.

Dr. Sheppard’s research includes perceptual processing in people with autism which involves studying how people with autism experience and react to the world around them. She also researches driving hazard perception which is the ability of drivers to identify hazardous events on the roads, and cultural influences on this ability.
