The University of Nottingham was recently awarded the 2011 JEC Innovation prize for research on carbon fibre recycling. Nottingham was the only university to win this award which is traditionally granted to the corporate sector.

The university won the award under the student research category which was conferred to PhD student, Edwin Pang, Professor Andy Chan, from the Department of Civil Engineering at the Malaysia Campus and Dr. Steve Pickering, Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering in the UK.

JEC Asia Awards are the most important research and industrial awards in the area of composite materials. The JEC Award Events attract participants from all over the world and the exhibition draws more than 200,000 attendees. The University of Nottingham is the only university so far to have won a research award during the event.

In collaboration with Technical Fibre Products the award was the result of research into the development of recycled carbon fibre sheets as textile heating elements used in garment and food delivery applications.

The breakthrough in the processing of the recycled carbon fibre offers durability as well as conductivity. The final product is already on the market as food delivery bags for an international fast food chain. The finished product provides flexibility and stable heating performance, enabling food delivery outlets to provide food that retains heat thus allowing delivery to a much larger area.

This award is a true testament of the success of inter-campus research collaborations between the UK and Malaysia as well as knowledge transfer initiatives in university–industry collaborations.
