Malaysia Campus unveils new Cognitive Neuroscience Course

The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus unveils a new Bachelor of Science with Honours in Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience from September 2011. This will provide an opportunity for students to embark on a specialist Cognitive Neuroscience degree course, in addition to the single honours degree in Psychology, which has been offered at the Malaysia campus since September 2009.

While Psychology is the study of mental processes, Cognitive Neuroscience is concerned with the scientific study of the biological substrates underlying cognition, perception and action. It is a multi-disciplinary field; involving research and methods from biology, psychology, medicine, chemistry, physics, computer science, engineering, mathematics and philosophy, and has a vast number of real world applications.

Cognitive approaches to investigation range from field surveys to laboratory experiments, patient cases studies to the latest brain imaging techniques. In 2003 University of Nottingham Professor Sir Peter Mansfield was awarded a Nobel Prize for Physiology/Medicine for the work of in the development of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and we continue to conduct research with various cutting-edge facilities.

This course offers a unique opportunity for students from both Malaysia and abroad to study at one of the only institutions in Malaysia in which all members of teaching staff are actively involved in Psychological and Cognitive Neuroscience research.

Students who enrol on this course learn through an interactive approach - carrying out their own Cognitive Neuroscience research in conjunction with our highly qualified staff, while receiving a thorough theoretical grounding through lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions and experimental participation.

A recent study by Higher Education Careers Services Unit revealed that Psychology graduates gain an impressive range of skills that increases the employability. The specialised scientific training gained from our BSc (Hons) in Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience provides students with a range of valuable skills that will be indispensable in both their future careers and their wider lives.
