On 16 December 2019, University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) witnessed the arrival of a cohort consisting of 20 student participants from Shin Ansan University for the English Winter Programme 2020, organised by the Centre for English Language & Foundation Education (CELFE).
Their arrival marks the 4th cohort to be sent to UNMC from Shin Ansan University for the programme, led by Miss Li Yeun, Director of English Language Education.
This programme is designed to enhance the students’ overall English language proficiencies, ranging from grammar, sentence structures, writing, comprehension, academic discussion and presentation skills, over the course of
4 weeks. Participants enjoyed being taught by experienced lecturers in a fun-filled and engaging classroom environment. Participants also had the opportunity to utilise UNM’s facilities to participate in after class activities such as badminton and swimming classes.
On weekends, participants, along with selected UNM students as their academic mentors, ventured to the historical city of Malacca and the great metropolis of Kuala Lumpur to take in the myriad of attractions. Given this occasion to experience Malaysian culture, they tried and indulged in many different local foods, while also immersing themselves in the many attractions these sites had to offer.
As the final week of the programme approached, participants evinced their learning throughout this programme, where they were assessed through a group presentation and a seminar discussion, challenging their writing, presentation, discussion and listening skills.
Finally, as this programme came to an end, the participants, mostly teary eyed, had to bid farewell to UNM - a place where they gained heaps of enjoyment, exciting experiences and new knowledge from CELFE’s English Winter Programme. Students left with a heavy-heart, but with increased English language proficiency, new friends, precious memories, but most importantly, an experience that will be cherished for the rest of their lives.
