The Centre for English Language and Foundation Education (CELFE) recently hosted 16 students from the prestigious Hanyang University, South Korea who were selected to participate in a 2-week winter programme at the University of Nottingham Malaysia campus in Semenyih. The students, who are all pre-service English language teachers pursuing a degree in Education at Hanyang University were accompanied by Prof. Kim Sung Yeon, the Chair of the Department of English Education in College of Education. The main aim of the winter programme was to enhance the participants’ oral communication and study skills with emphasis on the enhancement of listening and discussion strategies, academic presentation skills and inter-cultural communicative competence, among others. The participants also had the opportunity to experience the local lifestyle and culture at Pachitan Homestay, Port Dickson which gave them deeper insights on some aspects of Malaysian life such as food, games and music. The participants stated that they were delighted for getting the opportunity to adorn traditional Malay attire and taste sumptuous local delicacies during their stay with local families at this Malay village. From the feedback garnered, the programme was well received by the participants as they had cited the quality of teaching and learning, state-of-art campus facilities and warm reception as key features that had contributed to their overall positive experience of the 2-week programme.
