The Centre for English Language & Foundation Education (CELFE) at the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) recently organised a four-week immersive learning experience that took place on campus grounds from 2 to 29 July 2023. The programme welcomed a total of 33 Taiwanese undergraduates from Yuan Ze University.
The programme was delivered by experienced CELFE tutors and assisted by UNM student mentors who ensured a supportive and interactive learning environment. The modules were meticulously designed to encourage active listening, foster student collaboration, and enhance critical thinking. The participants actively engaged in various classroom activities, such as group discussions, role play, and Treasure Hunt to develop communication skills, which are crucial for academic success and building good rapport with one another.
A visit to the micro algae lab was also arranged for some of the participants who are currently pursuing their studies in Chemical Engineering. The participants were very excited to don the lab coats before entering the lab to gain insights on the processes of cultivating algae, as Malaysia is set to be the centre to establish the world’s first algae biotechnology consortium (ABC) since Malaysia has a good environment and more sunlight compared to Taiwan that has four seasons.
Twice a week, the participants were allotted a refreshing 2-hour sports session. These sessions not only served as a welcome break from the academic rigour, but also encouraged the students to engage in physical activities, promoting a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Moreover, a special Sports Night was thoughtfully organised to connect all the participants and UNM student mentors for a fun-filled evening of friendly sports competition, which provided an opportunity for them to bond and build friendships to last a lifetime.
To enrich the academic program, the participants had the opportunity to explore the vibrant city of Kuala Lumpur, where they visited the majestic Batu Caves, experienced the cultural diversity of the city at Central Market and enjoyed the modern elegance of KLCC, a renowned landmark in Malaysia.
This programme received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the participants, who expressed their gratitude for the well-structured modules and the dedication of the lecturers. They were particularly appreciative of the friendly and inclusive atmosphere given by the UNM community, which made them feel welcomed and supported throughout their stay. At the end of the programme, tearful goodbyes were exchanged as the students bid farewell to UNM and their newfound mentors. Nevertheless, the memories created during their time together would forever remain etched in their hearts, cherished, and treasured for years to come.
