On Saturday 29 October, Thomas Barker (School of Modern Languages and Cultures) delivered a keynote speech at Brawijaya University (Indonesia) for their ICON LATERALS 2016 conference. Under the conference theme Imagining Language, Literature and Culture in a Cosmopolitan World, Dr Barker discussed how contemporary Indonesian Islamic-themed films provide a window onto how contemporary Indonesians see and interact with the world and others. The speech entitled Remapping the World discusses how the films and their characters tend to find solidarity with other Muslims and begin to interpret the world as a network of Islamic communities and histories.
