Nottingham School of Economics among top ranked

The University of Nottingham School of Economics is one of the top ranking economics departments in the world, both in terms of teaching and research. The School is placed well inside the top 100 by both the prestigious QS World University Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities carried out by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Based on research carried out over a 5-year period, Nottingham jumped an impressive 12 places to 35th in the world in the recent Tilburg University Top 100 of Economics Schools Research Rankings.

Established at the Malaysia campus in 2010, September will herald the School’s second student intake with significant interest from prospective students throughout the country and South East Asia region, as well as internationally. Growing demand will generate an estimated student population of around 200 by 2012, including undergraduates and PhD researchers. The first ever intake of economics students will also start at the Ningbo China campus this year.

A diverse cohort is currently made up of 60% Malaysian and 40% international students who typically join the School with A-level or equivalent qualifications in economics, statistics, mathematics and a range of social science subjects. An Economics degree from Nottingham is a passport to a bright future with graduates in great demand from top employers around the world and high average starting salaries. Many choose careers in financial or business services in the private sector, government, education and with international organisations or go on to further study. However, almost any job will have an analytical orientation and an Economist on the team can help producing the insights that lead to better and more informed decisions. Therefore, demand for Nottingham graduates and their special skills will continue to rise in the Asian region as their economy’s mature and decision-makers are faced with increasingly complex choices. During the course of their study students also have internship opportunities and get hands on experience working as an Economist.

Likewise, the academic composition of the School is a mix of talented local and international Economists. Associate Professor Teo Wing Leong and Assistant Professor Jimmy Teng are both from the region and hold PhD’s from top ranking US universities John Hopkins and Duke University respectively. Teo Wing Leong is a macroeconomics specialist and Jimmy Teng is an expert in Bayesian Games Theory. A team of experienced international Economists strengthens the academic team. Daniel Schoch is a Micro-economist specialising in experimental and behavioural economics who was formerly Assistant Professor and Director of International Studies at Chang Mai University in Thailand. Dr Maria Punzi will shortly be joining the School, having previously held research fellowships with the Central Banks of Ecuador and Finland. Maria specialises in macroeconomics and holds a PhD from Boston College.

With an outstanding academic team in place and ever expanding student population, the Nottingham School of Economics at the Malaysia campus aims to build on its excellent reputation and develop into one of the hubs for economics in the region, providing relevant and timely teaching and research for the next generation of Economists in Asia.
