Dr Sivathass Bannir Selvam has played a crucial role as the module co-convenor for various courses in Environmental and Geographical Sciences. Since 2018, he has been actively involved in organizing and conducting the Tropical Environmental Science Field Course's River Pollution, Mangrove, Microplastic, and Coral Reef module. This module, designed for second-year students, offers a comprehensive learning experience on environmental field sampling theory and practical skills. Students get the opportunity to spend a week on Tioman Island, where they engage in hands-on activities related to the module's themes.
In addition to his responsibilities as a co-convenor, Dr Siva has also served as the convenor for the Tropical Water and Soil Science module in the second year. This module explores the fundamental chemical, physical, and biological processes that shape the characteristics of water and soil. It encompasses both theoretical and practical components, involving fieldwork and laboratory experiments.
Dr Siva has also taken on the role of convenor for the Environmental Pollution and Remediation module. This module delves into the scientific foundations of contemporary environmental pollution processes, the study techniques employed, the fate and impacts of various pollutants across different scales, and the current management and remediation methods available.
Furthermore, Dr Siva has successfully fulfilled the position of convenor for the Research Skills for Postgraduate Students module (GEOG 4094). This module, offered to students from the School of Psychology and the School of Environmental and Geographical Sciences, equips postgraduate students with essential research skills. Dr Siva has delivered this module for multiple batches within a single academic year, and he continues to expand its reach, expecting participants from the MRes and MSc programs of the School of Psychology, as well as students from other schools. Notably, he recently welcomed the inaugural batch of students from the new Master of Science program in Developmental Disorder, offered by the School of Psychology within the FOSE (School of Environmental and Geographical Sciences).
Current Research
Dr Sivathass Bannir Selvam is a researcher specializing in the field of environmental pollution and remediation, with a primary focus on microplastics and micropollutants in river ecosystems. With extensive expertise in this area, Dr Siva conducts research to investigate the impacts of these contaminants on aquatic environments and develop strategies for their mitigation.
Microplastics in River Ecosystems
Microplastics have become a significant environmental concern due to their widespread distribution and potential adverse effects on aquatic organisms. Dr Siva's research aims to enhance our understanding of microplastics' occurrence, sources, and fate in river ecosystems. By employing advanced analytical techniques and innovative sampling methods, Dr Siva investigates the abundance and composition of microplastics in different river systems. This research provides valuable insights into microplastics' sources and transport mechanisms, contributing to the development of effective management strategies to minimize their impact.
Micropollutants in River Systems
Industrial and agricultural activities introduce a wide range of micropollutants into river ecosystems, posing risks to aquatic organisms and human health. Dr Siva's research focuses on assessing the occurrence, behaviour, and ecological impacts of various micropollutants in rivers. Through comprehensive field studies and laboratory experiments, Dr Siva investigates the fate and transport of these contaminants, their accumulation in biota, and their potential toxicological effects. This research contributes to the development of sustainable practices for pollutant management and the preservation of riverine ecosystems. Currently, his research focuses on the prevalence of Pharmaceutically Active Compounds (PhAC) in riverine systems.
Past Research
Apart from Dr Siva's current expertise in microplastics and micropollutants, he has also conducted significant research in the field of wastewater treatment, specifically anaerobic treatment methods. His past research focused on exploring the physiological and molecular responses of anaerobic microorganisms during wastewater treatment. By employing laboratory-scale experiments, Dr Siva investigated the efficiency and performance of anaerobic treatment processes, aiming to improve their effectiveness and establish sustainable wastewater management strategies. Through his research, Dr Siva strives to provide scientific evidence and practical solutions to address the environmental challenges associated with contaminants in rivers, ultimately contributing to the conservation and sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems.
