The School of Geography at UNMC together with the HCMC Institute of Resources Geography in Vietnam have initiated a research collaboration on investigating the environmental impact of current urbanisation processes taking into account the possible abnormal phenomena induced by climate change.
In the first step, the matching grant project titled 'Urban growth monitoring with multi-scale remote sensing approach' aims at investigating the suitability of existing remote sensing data for monitoring different growing patterns of HoChiMinh City, Vietnam and developing a multi-scale remote sensing mapping framework for urban growth. The Pump & Priming grant from Faculty of Science was awarded to Dr. Tuong-Thuy Vu to develop this initiative.
The project outcomes which reflect the on-going human activities will be further incorporated with environmental and socio-economic data to answer the question '‘Does the current urbanisation process significantly contributes to the negative environmental impact induced by the on-going climate change?’. The future research collaboration will engage various relevant research organisations, local authorities and communities in Vietnam to enhance the public awareness.
